ABSTRACT

Anglian Water, a FTSE 100 company, is a major provider of water and environmental services to 5 million customers in the east of England and to over 4 million customers around the world. With privatisation of the industry in 1989 Anglian Water made this close link to the environment explicit with the publication of a corporate environmental policy in 1990. A statement of intent described in a corporate environmental policy is a good place to begin as a foundation for a public environmental report. For Anglian Water, the policy is the framework around which the annual environmental reports are built. Defining the audience goes a long way to defining what is to be gained from publishing an environmental report. For Anglian Water the report is aimed at clearly defining the company as a responsible organisation in the way that money is invested in meeting the needs and improving the quality of life of customers while protecting the environment.
