ABSTRACT

If the remedy to consumers "right to know" is labeling, few if any food manufacturers are availing themselves of the cure. The argument they give is that "they can't." Why? Once the transgenic food product reaches the open market, virtually all of it has been mixed with non-engineered conventional product. According to Pillsbury foods, genetically engineered soybeans are found in virtually all of its food products because transgenic soybeans and natural soybeans are already commingled when they buy them as commodity.1 As we have shown, the routine mixing together of transgenic versus nonengineered food staples virtually guarantees that the end product cannot be accurately labeled. The combination of engineered and non-engineered product has taken place in spite of a recent industry poll which found that 93% of all American citizen respondents deemed labeling highly desirable or necessary.2
