ABSTRACT

Why are some farmers more innovative than others? Is it because they have access to more resources than other farmers or because a lack of resources forces them to be innovative? Are some farmers more curious than others? Do some simply enjoy playing around with new things? Does gender make a difference: are female-headed households less innovative than male-headed ones? Answers to these and many more questions about farmer innovators and innovation processes are often only anecdotal or based on only a small number of case studies. This chapter reports on a survey that was designed to gain a wider overview of farmer innovation in East Africa.
