Farmer innovation and plant breeding: the case of maize K525 developed by Emmanuel Kamgouo of Bandjoun, West Cameroon

Scientists in Cameroon had introduced high-yielding cultivars of maize, but farm families preferred the taste of the local variety. A farmer innovator, Emmanuel Kamgouo, persevered with his own informal experimentation and managed to create a new variety of maize that had not only high yields but also a good taste. Other farmers and scientists are now evaluating his variety.
