ABSTRACT

In Burkina Faso, a team of scientists, extension agents and farmer innovators analysed the sustainability of zaï, a local technique widely applied in Yatenga to rehabilitate degraded land and to increase agricultural production. The research was designed to identify the limits to the performance of the zaï developed by farmer innovators and the conditions affecting the development of this technique in the context of scarce resources. Tools for PRA were combined with on-farm experiments involving all partners throughout the process. The experience revealed to the scientists and extension agents how participatory research can support agricultural extension.
