ABSTRACT
Why should housing be important for class analysis? The answer is straightforward. Although the housing consumption of any individual or household is primarily a product of their purchasing power – and hence of their past and present position in the labour market, inherited wealth and other sources of finance – the size, quality and cost of housing are a key element of household consumption, social inequality and household life-chances.
