ABSTRACT

This paper introduces the new syllabus for GCSE Japanese (pages 88–102), and discusses a small body of materials, all readily available in the UK, that the author is currently using to prepare students for the new GCSE examination, which was held in 1992 for the first time. Before looking at these two areas in detail, however, this paper will start with a brief history of the testing of Japanese in schools and colleges in the UK in order to put the new examination in perspective.
