ABSTRACT

Keeping myself in constant communication both with the captains of the different warships and the commanders of mail and other steamers frequenting Japan, I learned much from them concerning the appearance of such lights as they passed. It was very gratifying to find that very general commendation was expressed. That results so satisfactory were obtained, was chiefly due to the pressure which I was enabled, through Sir Harry Parkes, to bring on the servants of the Japanese Government.
