ABSTRACT

At any one time, the nature of a place reflects the nature of the people there. Its culture which is as good a term as any other to describe its nature may be very homogeneous, because the great majority of the people there have been socialised in the same way and share a wide range of attitudes and beliefs. Alternatively, it may be very heterogeneous, comprising people from different backgrounds and providing conflicting role models for the socialisation process. The culture of a place is not independent of its people to believe that would be to believe in a form of cultural determinism but it is something that they assimilate and sustain: to a great degree they can do no other, since individual and group survival is dependent on accepting the local cultural norms in large part if not entirely.
