ABSTRACT

Tanaka'sinstrumentalismwasexpressedasJikkenris&- shugib(ExperimentalIdealismorIdealisticExperimentalism). HedefinedhisattitudeinthefollowingEnglishterms:"natural" ornaturalisticinoppositiontoanymetaphysicalandmystical conceptionoflife.Life,inturn,mustbelivedexperimentally, thatis,itmustbebasedondailysociallife.Secondly,itwas a"developmental"conception,because,contrarytoanimaltendencieswhicbareadeterminedand"fixeddatum",human tendenciesareindeterminateandtendtowardanideal.Thirdly, theexperienc8oflifewas"organic"inthesensethat,notwithstandingallstrifeandsuffering,manprogressestowardahigher Lndbetterunityoftheself.Finally,itwas"functional",asall idealsmustpossesssocialefficiency,whichwillmakepossiblean ;-,djustmenttosociety.Fromtheseandotherstatements, Tanaka'sinstrumentalismappearedtobederivedfromDewey's position.Hisoriginalityconsistedinhisotherviews,andin hisphilosophyofculture.
