ABSTRACT
The reorganization of Japan's top-level scientific organizations is the subject-matter of this chapter, an effort which some of those associated with the Scientific and Technical Division considered the most important task undertaken by the Division. Two bodies resulted from the quite cumbersome process set up to 'reorganize Japanese science' - the Science Council of Japan (JSC) and the Scientific and Technical Administration Commission (STAC). JSC is still an important element in the life of Japanese scholarship, but STAC was dissolved and replaced by a more powerful governmental body (the Science and Technology Agency) soon after the Occupation ended.
