Not that all things we meet in this sphere were mechanically modelled upon the same pattern: there is obviously a great breadth of variability and autonomy within the general framework; and the more intimately this system is known the more it appears not as an order imposed from without and above, but as a Gestaltung, a coordinated whole of activities and attitudes able to support itself and restore its order against disturbances from within or without; a Gestaltung moulded and remoulded in a process in which the patterns governing each field are woven into a pattern of a higher order, of greater integrative range and force.
