ABSTRACT

The satsuma students lived overseas in Western society, some for just one year, others for as long as ten. Returning to Japan, they took back with them the skills and knowledge that they had each acquired in the course of their individual experiences abroad. They arrived, however, to find a new government in the throes of building a modern nation-state, and one that was to confine them to the roles of specialist technicians.
