ABSTRACT

The zionist movement inspired Christians all over the world, who saw in the Jewish return to the Holy Land, a prelude to the Second Coming of Christ. Pietistic and Puritan Protestants had long preached that only when the Jews returned to Palestine and accepted Christianity would the Kingdom of God be established and Jesus would return to rule the world from Jerusalem (the ‘millennium’). In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many Protestant fundamentalists in England and the United States shared this belief.
