ABSTRACT
The recent death of the Showa emperor prompted a new wave of interest in Japan's imperial institution as well as in the personality and role of the man whose reign was the longest in Japan's recorded history. Professor Kiyoko Takeda's book is therefore timely and fulfils a demand for more scholarly studies on this topic.
