ABSTRACT

Tele Greenland A/S is responsible for all telecommunication in Greenland, including telephone, data transmission, maritime and air-to-ground radio systems and transmission of radio and TV programmes. The country’s 56 000 inhabitants are spread out along the coastal zones of this big island and the communication network is therefore based on radio links and satellite systems. There is no power grid for the repeater stations to connect to, so each must have its own power supply. The sites are accessible only by helicopter, and servicing and fuel transport for conventional fossil-fuel- or battery-powered systems is rather expensive. The radio equipment is powered by a 48 V DC battery, to which the Photovoltaic arrays and the diesel generators supply their energy. The diesel part of the system is based on the equipment used at bigger sites where the diesel generators are run continuously. It includes two Lister Petter type TS2 diesel generators of 8 or 12 kVA.
