ABSTRACT

A battery is composed of a number of electrochemical storage cells, which store electricity in the form of chemical energy. In order to achieve higher voltages, cells are connected together in series to form a battery. This connection may be made by assembling cells together in one battery package or it may be made by external interconnections between individual cells. Battery capacity is usually specified in ampere-hours and should indicate how long the battery could operate until it reaches a specific cut-off voltage under a set load and without any recharge. In a Photovoltaic system, the daily depth-of-discharge experienced may not be the same each day, owing to differences in availability of sunshine. In addition to daily cycles, the battery may be required to provide seasonal storage during winter or during the heavily overcast periods common in cold climates. Starting, lighting, ignition batteries are manufactured for the automotive industry.
