ABSTRACT
For many years there were few books on the history of Japanese science available in English. When Japan hosted the 14th International Congress of the History of Science in 1974, a great effort was made to collect and translate a cross-section of historical studies that emphasized the "externalist" approach to the history of science, and the people involved in this project have since dominated the field.
