ABSTRACT
The history of calculating devices reaches well beyond the boundaries of the history of science; business and accounting have made routine use of reckoning aids, and many specialpurpose tools have been devised to reduce the burden of calculation within engineering disciplines. However, much of the modern impetus towards historical study in this area stems from efforts to construct a chronology for the history of computing.
