ABSTRACT
A Greek-speaking Roman citizen from Pergamon in Asia Minor, Galen was for a long time second only to Hippocrates as one of the most famous names in ancient medicine. In Galen's case, however, a large corpus of writings - both medical and philosophical - has been transmitted under his name (and is with all probability actually Galen's work). These writings are also our main source for details about his life.
