Solar process heat

Recent studies indicate that lightweight parabolic trough systems can provide heat at costs between €0.03 and €0.1 per kWh, depending on the temperature level and the location in Southern or Central Europe. In the investigated temperature and power range, trough systems can outperform the more commonly known types of solar collector in terms of the annual energy collected and the specific cost of solar heat (Figures 10.1 and 10.2). This may not yet be fully competitive with the still low cost of process heat from fossil-fired facilities and as waste of conventional electricity generation, but it can be attractive for pioneer markets where environmental concerns or a 'green' image justify the incremental costs of the solar system.
