ABSTRACT

The oceans cover more than two-thirds of the surface of our planet and represent an energy resource that is theoretically far larger than the entire human race could possibly use. Land-based renewable energy technologies are already facing constraints, for example conflicts over land use, visual intrusion, etc. The seas will therefore be important in the future as they offer huge open spaces where future new energy technologies could be deployed on a grand scale, without serious impact on either the environment or on other human activities.
