ABSTRACT
I HAVE GIVEN a brief account of the role of Sir John Figgess, the British Commissioner for Expo' 70 in Osaka, in my biographical portrait of him in the Japan Society's Biographical Portraits, Volume III, edited by Jim Hoare and published by Japan Library in 1999. The following contributions by four of the English young women (LESLEY CONNORS, LYDIA GOMERSALL, JANET HUNTER and ANNE KANEKO) who helped in the British Pavilion and by PETER MARTIN, who was the British Council representative in Kyoto in 1970, supplement my brief account and help to recreate the atmosphere of those months thirty years ago:-
