I can remember as a young third/second secretary in the British Embassy in Tokyo in the early 1950s being invited to a party at the grand residence in Yokohama of the manager for Japan of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. The atmosphere was colonial (if I recollect correctly almost all the guests were expatriates) and anachronistic.
