ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 is a unique presentation which grew out of a course entitled "Science in the Ancient World," offered at the University of Illinois in 1990 and for several years at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The author, Paul Keyser, holds two doctorates, one in physics and the other in classics. This background makes him uniquely qualified to dissect Heron's (Hero's) famous "steam engine" from the viewpoints of both classical scholarship and practical science and to develop a novel interpretation of how this invention was really used.
