ABSTRACT

During the past fifty years, researchers, especially Samuel Rubio and Klaus Fischer, have identified thirteen compositions by Tomás Luis de Victoria which were not known to exist when Philippo Pedrell prepared his edition of Victoria's works in the first decade of this century. The present study represents a continuation of this recovery process. Two motets — Ave verum corpus, a5 and Date ei de fructu, a4 — which are attributed to Victoria in their respective sources, are examined. Using the analytical method pioneered by Rubio in his study of O doctor optime, the stylistic evidence suggests that Victoria is most probably the composer of these two works.
