ABSTRACT

A discussion about the making of seven documentaries for British Network Television on the anthropology of Central Asia. The problems of filming lay as much in the union-management struggles in England as with the differing administrations of Afghanistan, Pakistan and China. The resulting films were aimed at a general public but at the same time were meant as relevant anthropology in their own right.

The author does not believe that the two are mutually exclusive.
