PART TWO Personhood and the Dynamics of Culture THREE The constitution of the person and the externality of power

In the collection L 1dmtit! Fran~ise Heritier provides a model of Samo identity and representation of the person in which the individual is composed of a number of components, material and spiritual, whose sources are all external; God, the ancestors, the forest, father and mother, which, following death, either return whence they came or travel to some new place. The individual is, thus, "un feuilletage" of these components, or, "une concretisation ponctuelle" of a crossroad where a horizontal line divides the Real from the Sureal and a vertical line divides the Universe from Humanity (1977:65-66).
