Cannibalism and the loss of political power
Evans-Pritchard's work on cannibalism among the Azande (1965) where he claimed that the rumors were much exaggerated, represented something of a turning point. In Arens' sketchy work Cannibalism: the man-eating myth (1979) the doubts are taken to extremes. Arens claims, without apology, that he, in spite of energetic searching, has not been able to find "adequate documentation of cannibalism as a custom in any form for any society". All he found were rumors and fantasies - ·rumors, suspicions, fears and accusations abound, but no satisfactory first-hand accounts" (ibid:21).
