ABSTRACT

The World Health Organization (WHO), 1991, November 11) estimates that three quarters of the 8-10 million people infected with HIV worldwide have been infected through heterosexual contact. In central Africa, where more than half of those infected live, heterosexual contact has been the predominant mode of transmission since the pandemic began. The results have been devastating. As of November, 1991, the WHO reported that HIV disease is split nearly equally between more than 6 million men and women and has affected an estimated 900,000 children. The picture is being repeated in India, Latin America and Southeast Asia (South, 1991).
