Making a Road in Marriage: Women as Objects and Subjects of Exchange

Firstly, there is no real explanation as to why women rather than men are exchanged. If the purpose of the incest taboo and the exchange of spouses is to create communication and to expand the boundaries of sociality, then men should equally well suffice. One needs some additional premise for instance, that women are more crucial as both producers and reproducers, or that males are in control of the language of sociality (through force or ideological persuasion), to account for why women and not men are exchanged.
