ABSTRACT
The Japanese original of this short essay appeared for the first time as part of the liner notes for the LP record, “Ozawa-Takemitsu ‘69” (Victor Japan, RCA SX-2022). It was later included in Takemitsu’s Oto, chinmoku to hakariaeru hodoni (Tokyo, Shinchôsha, 1971), his first book of collected essays. This is its first translation into English.
