ABSTRACT

The dance community in Japan in quite conservative in many ways; there is some resistance not only to Western things but to anything new. Most dance training in Japan is done in private studios. It is important to understand too that the modern dance teachers in Japan do not think that what they teach comes from the West. The Japanese dancers usually just want technique classes, because that is what they know; they aren't accustomed to studying improvisation, or composition, or dance therapy. An Creative is a unique company as far as the Japanese dance community is concerned, though there are some individuals who do the same kind of work. An Creative developed the two-week summer training program, with the assistance of Mr. Ichikawa and Sumie Yonei, one of Tokyo's leading modern dance choreographers, essentially to fill the void left by our failure to maintain American Dance Festival (ADF)-Tokyo on a regular basis.
