ABSTRACT

Yook Wan-soon is a dancer, choreographer, writer, Ph. D. in dance, and Professor of Modern Dance at Ewha Women's University in Seoul, South Korea. Dance education in the universities should be validated, she thought; a good dancer can and should be made through systematic and scientific education. The dance her students and she do has a different sensibility from Western modern dance, though that difference is difficult to describe in words. Korean dancers have a unique way of using their arms. Modern Dance Promotion of Korea (MDPK) which she established in 1985: This organization has as its primary objective to increase, through cultural and artistic exchanges, mutual understanding between nations and international cooperation in dance. Toward fulfillment of that goal MDPK sponsors creative performances and scientific research in dance, supports programs that guide and educate young people through dance activities, and publishes dance literature. People might think of MDPK as institutionalization of burgeoning nationalism and optimism among Korean dancers.
