ABSTRACT
Leon Koning's choreography includes classical-style ballets and modern dances, solos as well as works for 100 and more dancers, works for professional dance companies and for students. In 1984 he started a combined job as Ballet Master/Teacher for Cloud Gate and Teacher at the National Institute of the Arts (NIA). The major problem in Taiwan is that people still have no professional ballet companies. In Taiwan the military has a department for singing and dancing and music, to entertain the other soldiers, but of course a ballet dancer can't maintain himself doing that kind of thing. But Ballet provides a nice technique for expressing many things, but the Taiwanese dancers are equally well versed in Chinese dance and modern dance. Leon Koning thinking is that would give the dancers more of an opportunity to create new works to express themselves within their own culture.
