ABSTRACT

We received the draft of the communication for the Turkish Government on the ensuing signature of the British-Soviet Treaty of Alliance given to you by Eden. Before we received your telegram with this draft, and basing ourselves on your telegram No. 31 [See Document 59.] in which you said that the Treaty would be signed on 26 May, we have entrusted Vyshinsky, as you asked, to make a relevant statement to the Turkish Embassy about the ensuing signature of the Treaty. Vyshinsky made the statement to the Turkish charge d'affaires in Kuibyshev. The text of Vyshinsky's verbal statement does not differ from the draft you have sent.
