ABSTRACT

An account of the designs made by visual artists invited by Jasper Johns for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, during the period 1967–1970. The study focuses on the interrelationship between Cunningham's concept of dance and the scene designs produced for his company. Both the aesthetic and the technical aspects of the designs are considered as they relate to the dances for which they were commissioned. Artists discussed are Frank Stella, designer for Scramble (1967); Andy Warhol, designer for RainForest (1968); Jasper Johns, after Marcel Duchamp, designer for Walkaround Time (1968); Robert Morris, designer for Canfield (1969); Bruce Nauman, designer for Tread (1970); Jasper Johns, designer for Second Hand (1970); and Neil Jenney, designer for Objects (1970).
