ABSTRACT

AileyCamp is an unique summer day camp program designed to help underserved children ages eleven to thirteen discover their own self-worth. It is not the mission of AileyCamp to train these children to be professional dancers but rather to challenge them to excel through “the four A’s - Acceptance, Attention, Appreciation and Affection.” The six week project, which is provided free of charge to the youngsters and their families, began in 1989 under the aegis of the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, an incredible group of volunteers. Thanks to their vision and hard work, the AileyCamp program is now benefiting young people in Kansas City, New York, Baltimore and Frostburg, Maryland.
