ABSTRACT

Listening to a recording, even a live relay on the radio or television, is that much less satisfying because people are not physically in the same place as the actual performer; the experience, and the opportunity to dream, is therefore diminished. listening en masse removes many of the inadequacies of listening to a recording in one's own home -one has to concentrate on the music being played, without the many distractions of domestic life, and one can directly interact with one's fellow listeners. Playing a recording have heard of a live performance which took place, perhaps, many years ago, cannot be as fulfilling as listening to a live relay being broadcast from a concert hall or theatre. It is commonly the case that a commercially issued live recording (particularly of opera) is put together from tapes made at a number of different performances, and even sometimes at the rehearsals.
