ABSTRACT

The previous chapters have been based on articles and papers written over the last twenty years about my research into school effectiveness. They encompass work undertaken, with colleagues, mostly when I was working in two colleges of the University of London—the Institute of Psychiatry and the Institute of Education—and during the time I worked for the Inner London Education Authority. The purpose of this final chapter is to:

Comment on the progress made in this field of research in school effectiveness and school improvement over the last twenty years

Assess the implications of the field for both policy and practice

Sketch out an agenda for further work which can draw together the strands of academic progress, policy formulation and improvements in practice
