ABSTRACT

This chapter is based on a riposte to a series of critical articles included in a book published this year by the Institute. Some might see it as counterproductive for the Institute, which has been responsible for much of the most important work in this field, to promote a collection ofcritical articles. This would-in my view-be a misjudgement. Social science needs to criticize itself. Its concepts, methodologies and theories (whether explicit or implicit) must remain open to scrutiny if progress is to be made. That said, if criticisms appear unfair or misguided, they need to be countered or rejected.
