ABSTRACT

Applications that operate at the acoustic level record and output sound based on a digitized representation of an acoustic wavefonn. Computer applications in the score level use a symbolic encoding to represent specific attributes, or qualities, of sound. In the metalevel, compositional algorithms, processes and relationships are expressed. Each of these levels is a layer of abstraction that encapsulates, or hides, details in the next lower level. Figure 2 shows a single musical example depicted at the three abstraction levels. Each depiction is represented as a file containing an encoding of the example and an estimate of its size in bytes. The score and acoustic representations (Table 2 and Table 3) are generated automatically from the single metalevel construct shown in Table 1.
