ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an interview with Alex Dallas, Alison Field, and Wendy Vousden. Alex, Alison, and Wendy moved to Canada in 1989, having formed the comedy trio Sensible Footwear in London, England in 1982. Popular on the Canadian fringe theatre festival circuit, the three have written approximately eleven shows and have appeared at established Canadian playhouses and on national radio and television. Their humour seems to engage audiences through a keen sense of the vitality of the physical, especially sex, beyond or between the neat categories of nationality, sexuality, and ideology. Wendy said that many jokes reflect whatever the power structure is the rules of the society that we live in. Allison said that there was something like The Good Life that had two good women characters, well one slightly sappy woman character and one very good woman character. The interview, conducted in Toronto, Ontario on 28 June 1994, begins and ends on the topic of jokes and, curiously, shoes.
