ABSTRACT

I noticed when I came here that in the conference programme, it suggests that I’m going to be talking about words: the definition of a black aesthetic. That was frightening the daylights out of me. Yes I will move towards that with something which is a tentative suggestion, but I’d like to start by posing the question which I posed to myself over the last few weeks: Why should there be Black Theatre Studies in Higher Education, indeed why should we bother with black theatre at all?
