ABSTRACT

The Netherlands is a relatively small country with a small defence industry, and a defence policy aligned to Northern Ireland, the Falklands, and some other out of NATO doctrine and strategy. The Dutch defence technology development involves the Ministries of Defence (MoD) and of Economic Affairs (MoEA). The role of the MoEA is secondary as regards both the procurement of defence equipment by the MoD and the development of defence technology by Dutch industry. Parts of the electronics industry, the ammunition factories and the naval ship building industry are, however, predominantly military. In the first post-Cold War White Paper on the Dutch defence industry, the issue of Dual-use/Dual-purpose technology was raised again. The Ministry of Economic Affairs was asked to take civilian applications of military technology and product Research and Development (R&D) into account when supplying Commission for the Development of Defence Matriel (CODEMA) funds to industry.
