The Ternary Series. To calculate the relationship between dotted notes and the BOV, the Ternary Numerical Progression (TNP) is extremely helpful.
The principle: Any single dotted value equals 3 of the next plain shorter value in the BOV, and then 6 of the second next plain shorter value, then 12 of the third next plain shorter value, etc. So one dotted whole note/rest equals the following number of plain smaller values:
Maxim #40: Dots are added to notes and rests to create ternary values (divisible by 3 without a fraction). A dot indi cates the addition of the next smaller value in the BOV to the dotted symbol.
