'S AND 3'S
You have probably by now correctly deduced that 2's and 3's are the building blocks of Western rhythm. There are duple and triple beats (divisible by two or three); simple and compound note values (dotted values being triply divided); simple and compound time signatures (the 'beating note' divisible by two or three); and duple and triple time signatures (having two, three, or four beats per measure). In the above cases, the 2's or 3's are used consistently: you use either a simple or compound beat, a simple or compound measure, etc. As we enter this chapter, 2's and 3's will begin to come together WITHIN THE SAME MEASURE.
