ABSTRACT

Caffeine metabolism and pharmacokinetics have been reported in several reviews and monographs: Arnaud (1984, 1987, 1993a,b) and Anonymus (1991). This chapter reviews our present knowledge including the most recent published studies. Because there is a strong and significant relationship between coffee consumption and smoking, it was interesting to summarize the results obtained from metabolic studies looking at the interactions between caffeine and smoking habit (Swanson et al., 1994). It has also been shown that alcohol, nicotine and caffeine consumption are associated with chronotype, specially evening-types (Adan, 1994; see also Kole et al., Ch. 9). There are, however, only few studies looking at the interactions between caffeine kinetics and metabolism with alcohol consumption.
