ABSTRACT

Lew never officially retired; he just abdicated more and more responsibility to Michael Smuin. Although the latter had come to San Francisco in 1973 in a supporting role, in 1976 the partnership became an equal one. Smuin was appointed co-director with the understanding that all decisions regarding policy and programming would be agreed upon by both men. Lew took a back seat in the day-to-day running of the company and openly expressed support for his codirector’s efforts. Because Smuin carried the heavier burden, he received a larger salary than did Lew, who retreated ever further into the role of company figurehead. 1
