ABSTRACT

Dystonia is a term for a disorder of motor control characterized by muscle cramps and spasms or involuntary and abnormal movements. It may involve a single digit (focal dystonia) or the entire muscular system (generalized dystonia) but in musicians it is usually confined to the hand and arm or to the muscles of embouchure. This review summarizes the clinical features as seen in a group of instrumental musicians, the predisposing or triggering factors, the diagnostic approach, and the management of these disorders.
